About us

Hi, I’m Tony — a registered architect in Victoria and Tasmania.

Back in 2017, I was in my final year of a decade working on major capital projects for the City of Port Phillip. A big part of the internal conversation at Council wasn’t just about buildings — it was about the community.

We chat about stories of incomplete homes, building defects, and even builders going under mid-project, leaving families financially and emotionally exposed.

I thought… “Maybe I can be (very small😊) part of the solution.” And that’s how Refreshing Homes started.

Fast forward a few years, and I realised the reality is more complex.

Homeowners are busy. Building a first home is stressful. And support often comes too late. I still remember my first home in Point Cook, built by Porter Davis — I couldn’t even afford furniture for nearly two years. That experience stayed with me. It made me ask: how are everyday families meant to afford building advice and support? Especially when problems often only surface after decisions have already been made?

For a long time, it felt unsolvable.

Until AI, The Chatbot

The chatbot you see above is a way to gather real questions, allowing me to explain them in plain language, which the AI then delivers the answer to you and future users experiencing a similar situation.

The information is based on how the building process actually works, not generic internet answers. The bot is designed to respond that we haven’t received that question before if it can’t find a match. As this bot is in a very early stage, the AI often scrapes the internet to respond.

If the answer you find does not give you the clarity you want, we encourage you to come back every Tuesday with your same question to see if we have updated the database for your question, or simply leave your email at the end of your chat if you want your answer directly emailed to you as soon as I volunteer some time over weekends.

Please note:

1) The chat with the bot is recorded so I can review all questions.

2) Do not act on the conversation. Treat the information as a general chat for food for thought only.

3) The information we put together in the database may be used for profit-making in the future.

Why is this different?

Aren't chatbots everywhere? Well, I will give you an example.

In construction, designers and builders sometimes unintentionally influence how homeowners view building surveyors — often framing them as “too strict” or “getting in the way.” But the reality is...

The system is intentionally structured with two independent sides:

  • One side designs and builds.

  • The other side (building surveyors) independently reviews compliance against the BCA/NCC without financial interest in the build outcome.

Homeowners spend a lot of time with designers and builders, whereas their only correspondence with a building surveyor is via email and often consists of 'no, because...'

So naturally, the homeowner feels for the designer and the builder and think, 'Yes indeed, the designer is right; the building surveyor is too strict...

But if homeowners better understood the building surveyor’s role, their value in protecting the homeowner, and the value of working with them rather than against them, would building outcomes improve?

I don’t have the answers, but I think the information is worth explaining.

That’s what the chatbot above is about.

So here’s my experience…

I’m a registered architect in Victoria and Tasmania with over 25 years in the industry, including 10 years in project management and delivery of major capital works for the City of Port Phillip, and more than 280 projects across residential and public-sector environments.

My background spans both private practice and government, which has given me a detailed understanding of how projects actually move from concept to approval to construction — and where they commonly break down.

Over the years, I’ve also been directly involved in residential and townhouse developments as a developer myself, which gave me firsthand insight into financial pressure, construction risk, builder performance, and the real-world stress homeowners experience when things don’t go as planned.

My goal is simple: reduce confusion, reduce risk, and help people make better decisions earlier in the process so projects move forward with fewer surprises.
